A rainy winter school-holiday day at Palm Beach does not have to be a wasted one. Within about 20 minutes of Royal Palm you have five indoor and undercover options, from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary two minutes away to arcades, a night market and a cinema. Here is the plan, with real drive times from our front door and honest notes on parking.
Can you still enjoy Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in the rain?
Yes, and it is the closest big day out to us, a two minute drive south across the Currumbin Creek bridge. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary opens 9am to 4pm daily, with last entry at 3:30pm, and it runs rain or shine. Most of the walking loop sits under rainforest canopy, and the keeper presentations and the Wildlife Hospital viewing window are undercover, so a passing shower is easy to wait out. Guests keep mentioning the free-roaming kangaroos and the twice-daily lorikeet feeding as the parts the kids talk about afterwards. Wear closed shoes, grab a poncho at the gate, and plan on three to four hours. Parking is free onsite, and the covered cafe is a dry spot for lunch.
Where can the kids burn off energy indoors?
At Timezone Coolangatta, a ten minute drive south along the highway. Timezone sits inside The Strand shopping centre on Marine Parade and runs 10am to 10pm, so it works either side of a wet lunch. Under one roof there are more than 175 arcade games, short-lane ten pin bowling, laser tag, bumper cars and basketball, which covers everyone from a five year old to a competitive grandparent. The Strand has undercover parking, so you stay dry from the car to the games. Budget a couple of hours and a single game card the family shares, and it helps to set a spending cap before you walk in so nobody is negotiating at the counter.
Is there anywhere undercover to eat on a wet night?
Miami Marketta is the answer, about a twelve minute drive north at Miami. Miami Marketta is the Gold Coast’s original street food night market, and its 1,200 seats are all undercover in a converted warehouse laneway. It runs Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm, entry is free and no booking is needed. Global food stalls, free live music and a couple of boutique bars mean the grandparents, the parents and the kids can each order something different and still sit together. Come early on a school holiday night to claim a table before the music starts, and let everyone graze rather than committing to one kitchen. It turns a washed-out evening into the night the kids remember.
Is there a cinema and a big mall nearby?
There is, at Pacific Fair in Broadbeach, roughly a twenty minute drive north. Pacific Fair is the largest shopping centre on the coast, fully enclosed, with an Event Cinemas multiplex, hundreds of shops and a large food precinct. A wet afternoon disappears easily into a movie session followed by a wander, and the centre has acres of undercover parking so the weather never touches you. Check session times before you leave Royal Palm so you can drive straight in and book seats together, which matters on a busy school holiday day. It suits every age, from a toddler-friendly matinee to a browse for the teenagers, and it is the reliable fallback when the rain has properly set in for the day.
What is the best rainy day option closest to Royal Palm?
The Pines at Elanora, about a five minute drive inland, is the low-effort choice. It is our nearest shopping centre, with a supermarket, a food court, casual eateries and specialty stores under one roof. On a grey morning it is the easy call: duck out for a proper coffee, let the kids stretch their legs out of the weather, restock the apartment kitchen for a self-catered lunch, and be back at Royal Palm inside the hour. Parking is free and undercover. It will not fill a whole day on its own, but paired with a swim once the sky clears, it is all you need to ride out a passing squall.
FAQs
Is Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary open on rainy days?
Yes. The sanctuary is open 9am to 4pm every day except Anzac Day and Christmas Day. Much of the path runs under rainforest canopy, and the keeper talks and Wildlife Hospital viewing window are undercover, so a passing shower rarely stops a visit. Grab a poncho at the gate and plan on three to four hours.
Does it rain much at Palm Beach during the winter school holidays?
Not often. July is one of the driest months on the southern Gold Coast, with mild days around 21 degrees and the occasional passing shower. A wet day here usually means a few hours indoors rather than a washout, and the sun is often back by the afternoon.
Is there undercover parking at Royal Palm?
Yes. Every apartment includes one free space in our secure underground car park, so you can load the kids in and out without getting soaked. It also means you can leave the car and walk to the beach or the Pirate Park on the drier breaks in the weather.
What is there to do at the resort when it rains?
Plenty under cover. Our games room has arcade machines and a pool table, and there is a heated spa and steam room for the grown-ups. The lagoon pool is still yours too, and a swim in light rain is all part of a Palm Beach holiday.
A wet, rainy day is not the enemy of a good Palm Beach holiday, it is just a change of plan, and every option here is a short drive from our door. When the sun returns, the beach and the Pirate Park are waiting a few steps away. To start planning your stay, see what surrounds us and book direct with us for our best rate.
